Client: St Helena Government
Start / Finish Dates: July – September 2008
The aim of the Institutional Review was to analyse the then current administrative structures in relation to environmental protection and management within the St Helena Government, to assess the likely future environmental needs of St Helena Island, and, ultimately, to identify a preferred option for St Helena’s Environmental Institutional Set-up. The project involved extensive stakeholder consultation, including the holding of three workshops.
A total of eight potential options were identified and analysed. The preferred option as recommended by the Institutional Review was the establishment ultimately of the St Helena Environment and Planning Agency (SHEPA). A suggested organisational structure for this Agency was also outlined.
The Institutional Review was instrumental in the eventual reorganisation of St Helena Government’s environmental services and functions.
